Phylogenetic analysis of a transfusion-transmitted hepatitis A outbreak

Abstract: A transfusion-associated hepatitis A outbreak was found in the first time in Hungary. The outbreak involved five cases. Parenteral transmission of hepatitis A is rare, but may occur during viraemia. Direct sequencing of nested PCR products was performed, and all the examined samples were identical in the VP1/2A region of the hepatitis A virus genome. HAV sequences found in recent years were compared and phylogenetic analysis showed that the strain which caused these cases is the same as that had spread in Hung… Show more

“…[16,17] Water-borne HAV infections are mainly due to drinking water contaminated by adjacent septic tanks or swimming in water contaminated with sewage. [18,19] Food transmission mainly occurs when the faeces of HAV carriers are transferred to food during food preparation, or when the food plants are contaminated by the faeces of HAV carriers during harvesting or processing. Another modality of the faecal-oral route is extensive and close personal contact between the carrier and the vulnerable person.…”

“…A 41-year-old man, who was a regular apheresis donor, informed the Hungarian National Blood Transfusion Service (HNBTS) of his HAV infection 18 days after his last donation. A 6-year-old boy recipient and his grandmother, the other 65-year-old woman recipient, and one of the nurses in the hospital tested positive for HAV infection [ 99 ]. Nevertheless, in 2018, Lefeuvre et al reported a TAHA infection in an immunocompromised patient in France [ 100 ].…”

“…Faecal–oral, person-to-person spread is the principal mode of transmission in developed countries [4]. Common source outbreaks associated with contaminated water or food have also been reported, as well as transmission via contaminated blood products [57].…”
