Phyllotreta striolata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae): Arginine kinase cloning and RNAi-based pest control

Abstract: Abstract. Insect pests cause billions of dollars in crop losses and there is the ever-present threat of insecticide resistance, pesticide pollution of food and environmental damage. New ways of controlling insect pests are urgently needed. Arginine kinase (AK) is a phosphotransferase, which plays a critical role in cellular energy metabolism in invertebrates. It only presents in invertebrates and may be a suitable chemotherapeutic target in the control of pests. In this study, we cloned and characterized the f… Show more

“…Genes encoding a vacuolar V-ATPase and AK were chosen based on previous successful reports of RNAi used for insect control (Baum et al, 2007; Zhao et al, 2008; Kola et al, 2015). Since no sequences were available for T .…”

“…By comparison, siRNA is easy to synthesise and is becoming less costly. The smaller siRNA molecule could also be designed to be degradation resistant and to have enhanced stability . The application of siRNA is popular nowadays, and some therapy agents for hereditary diseases have even been developed .…”
