The status of emerging contaminant (EC) profiles in Southeast Asia is currently unclear and often overshadowed by studies conducted in developed regions such as North America, Europe, and Asia. EC research in Southeast Asia is especially critical due to its high population density and poor sanitation infrastructure that introduce large amounts of ECs into the aquatic environment. This literature Review investigated the status of EC research in 11 Southeast Asian countries. Key pharmaceutical groups such as antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, sulfamethazine, ciprofloxacin, and lincomycin) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (diclofenac, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen) were among the most frequently studied group of ECs, while other significant groups of interests in this Review included per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and phthalate esters (PAEs). With most Southeast Asian countries having agrarian economies and the onset of climate change, the overutilization of antibiotics and pesticides to meet the commercial demand for agriculture and livestock products is a major threat to aquatic environments and even human health in this region. This Review identifies understudied emerging contaminant groups in Southeast Asia such as disinfectants and transformation byproducts and recommends future research directions for Southeast Asia, particularly focusing on seasonal trends of EC input into surface and groundwater environments.

La 2 O 2 CO 3 -WO 3 composites were here proposed as unconventional photocatalysts for the removal of phthalates in water. The high sorption properties of the lanthanum dioxide carbonate allowed a strong adsorption of the phthalates which facilitated the following solar photocatalytic degradation, further boosted by the addition of small amounts of WO 3 (1 wt %). On the contrary, a higher content of WO 3 had a detrimental effect due to the covering of the surface sites of La 2 O 2 CO 3 that inhibited the adsorption process. This double mechanism of strong adsorption-photocatalytic oxidation led, after 6 h of solar irradiation, to 67 % and 63 % dimethyl phthalate and di(2ethylhexyl)phthalate degradation, respectively. The phthalates were degraded to less persistent pollutants that, however, were completely removed after 9 h of irradiation. The La 2 O 2 CO 3 -WO 3 system appears promising for its application in the removal of the emerging contaminants from water.[a] E.

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are a class of emerging xenobiotic compounds that are extensively used as plasticizers. In recent times, there has been an increasing concern over the risk of this pervasive pollution exposure causing endocrine disruption and carcinogenicity in humans and animals. The widespread use of PAEs in home and industrial applications has resulted in their discharge in aquatic bodies via leaching, volatilization, and precipitation. In this overview, the current state of PAE pollution, its potential origins, its fate, as well as its effects on the aquatic environment are discussed. A state-of-the-art review of several studies in the literature that focus on the biological degradation of PAEs is included in this study. The paper aims to provide a comprehensive view of current research on PAEs in the environment, highlighting its fate and alleviated risks on the aquatic biotas, their challenges, future prospects, and the need for good management and policies for its remediation. Practitioner Points:• Occurrence of phthalate esters was summarized in various environmental matrices along with its serious ecotoxicological implications on biota.• Wastewater is the prime source of PAEs contamination.• Lack of species-specific effects on biota due to dose, exposure route, and susceptibility.• The predominant route to mineralization in PAEs is biodegradation.• A critical analysis of worldwide PAE production and consumption identifies the necessity for global PAE production, consumption, and release policies.
