Photothermal effect of carbon quantum dots enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting of hematite photoanodes

Abstract: The photothermal effect of CQDs is introduced to promote the bulk charge transport and surface oxidation kinetics of Co-Pi/CQDs/Fe2O3/TiO2 photoanodes simultaneously, resulting in a remarkably enhanced PEC water splitting performance.

“…Nanomaterials are tiny particles with size distribution less than 100 nm. In the last decades, various types of nanomaterials have attracted the attention of many researchers in photocatalysis (Pan et al, 2021), electrocatalysis (Zhang et al, 2021a), photoelectrocatalysis (Hu et al, 2020;Zhao et al, 2020;Huang et al, 2021), solar utilization (Jiang et al, 2020), heat management (Zhang et al, 2021b) and other fields because of their unique properties (Wang et al, 2019;He et al, 2020). Among the numerous materials, Au represents one well-studied type (Xu et al, 2016) with tunable shape (Zhu et al, 2015), structure (Ma et al, 2015), and composition (Jiang et al, 2017).…”

“…The electrons or holes are resonated by light shining on the semiconductor, resulting in nanoscale local heating. [ 130 ] Introducing the photothermal effect into the catalytic process has two obvious advantages. First, a catalyst with a photothermal material can realize self‐heating under visual or NIR light without an external heating device.…”

“…CQDs are also common photothermal conversion materials. 16,17 Hu et al 17 introduced the photothermal characteristics of CQDs to promote the activity of a small polaron semiconductor (Fe 2 O 3 ) and accelerate the kinetics of water oxidation, so as to boost the PEC performance of photoelectrodes. This is because small polaron semiconductors such as Fe 2 O 3 , BiVO 4 and WO 3 (ref.…”
