Photosynthetic activity of selected genotypes of hops (Humulus lupulus L.) in critical periods for yield formation

Abstract: This paper evaluates the influence of genotype on the photosynthetic activity of hops in the period critical for generating yield. Results over three years from measuring the photosynthesis rate statistically show an increase in the photosynthetic activity of hop plants in the flowering stage. The average photosynthetic rates from measurements on the second date (BBA 65) in the years 2007, 2008, and 2009 increased by 17.9%, 45.6%, and 49.2%, respectively. Different photosynthesis curve trends during the final… Show more

“…In the present study, the highest yielding year was 2014 because of the favourable climatic conditions (without extreme heat events) registered from mid-June to late July: average temperatures between 20 and 22°C and more than 210 mm of total rainfall. In that period all cultivars were developing the reproductive stages of blooming and cone formation, which are fundamental phenological phases in determining final yield and production quality (Kucera and Krofta, 2009;Pokorný et al, 2011;Potop, 2014). This is confirmed by our observation during cultivars reproductive growth occurred in the following driest year.…”

“…The lowest P n was measured in the 21-29 BBCH phase, while maximum P n was measured in the 81-89 BBCH phase. Pokorný et al (2011) stated that the Premiant, Saaz hop (Os. No.…”

“…The recent craft beer expansion therefore not only triggered new microbreweries but also boosted the demand for aromatic hops globally 15 , 16 . Although linkages between hop production and climate variation have been reported at local to regional scales 9 , 10 , 17 27 , relatively little is known about the possible, direct and indirect, effects of a predicted warmer and drier climate on the yield and alpha content of hops.…”
