Photoswitchable Supramolecular Hydrogels Formed by Cyclodextrins and Azobenzene Polymers

Abstract: Shine a light: A supramolecular hydrogel is formed by the glucan curdlan equipped with α‐cyclodextrins (CD‐CUR) and azobenzene‐modified poly(acrylic acid)(pAC12Azo). The sol–gel transition and the morphology of the supramolecular hydrogel can be switched by photoirradiation at the appropriate wavelength, which controls the formation of an inclusion complex between the α‐cyclodextrins and the azobenzene moieties (see picture).

“…Self-thinning and self-healing properties of the gel were observed and as a result, an injectable hydrogel was obtained. 18 Furthermore, the non-covalent interaction enables the response of these soft materials to various stimuli, for example, light, [12][13][14] redox, 15,16 metal-ion 19 and temperature, 20 based on responsive guest molecules. Self-assembly of low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs), on the other hand, has also attracted considerable attention in the past decade.…”

“…When the sol was irradiated by visible light or heated, the sol turned back to a gel because of cis-to-trans isomerization. 44) Similarly, a polymer carrying Fc residues was mixed with that carrying βCD in forming a self-standing gel. When the gel was treated with an oxidizing agent, the gel turned into a sol.…”

“…Photochemical reaction and light-induced structural transformation can be completed within seconds or minutes by adjusting the parameters of external light source such as wavelength and intensity. [13][14][15] Recently, Kohane' group reported an example of photo-targeted nanoparticles. [ 16 ] This intelligent system was based on the photocaging method.…”
