Supramolecular Polymeric Materials Containing Cyclodextrins

Abstract: Smart design of polymeric materials may lead to intelligent materials exhibiting unique functional properties. Looking at nature, living systems use specific and reversible intermolecular interactions in realizing complex functions. Hence reversible bonds based on selective molecular recognition can impart artificial materials with unique functional properties. This review mainly focuses on supramolecular polymeric materials based on cyclodextrin-based host-guest interactions. Polymeric materials using molecul… Show more

“…A hydrogel incorporating both CD and ferrocene (FC) units expands on oxidation with Ce 4+ salts, as the resulting cationic FC + can longer bind in the CD cavity (Figure ). The movement of this artificial muscle is reversible, as shown with a weight attached to a gel strip, which moves up and down in a redox circle . A powerful movement was demonstrated with chitosan hydrogel filled in a small tube with pores allowing contact with the surrounding solution (Figure ) .…”

“…6g). Recently, advanced gels such as topological gels based on polyrotaxane 29,30) and supramolecular gels based on crosslinking through host-guest interactions 19,[164][165][166][167][168][169][170][171][172][173] have become a trend in material sciences. However, application of these materials in pharmaceutical sciences is limited so far.…”

“…CyDs and their derivatives are widely used as pharmaceutical excipients to improve pharmaceutical properties such as stability, solubility, bioavailability, and taste of drugs. 13,14,16) Notably, CyDs have been used as building blocks of supermolecules, [17][18][19][20] as well as crown ethers, 21) cucurbituril, 22) pillar[n] arenes, 23,24) cryptand, 25) and calixarene. 26) Therefore CyDs can play the role of mediators between supramolecular chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences.…”
