Photophysical Properties of Nitrated and Halogenated Phosphorus Tritolylcorrole Complexes: Insights from Theory

Abstract: The photophysical properties of a series of nitrated and halogenated phosphorus tritolylcorrole complexes were studied in dichloromethane solvent by using the density functional theory. Particular emphasis was given to the absorption spectra, the energy gap between the excited singlet and triplet states, and the magnitude of the spin-orbit couplings for a series of possible intersystem crossing channels between those excited states. The proposed study provides a better description of the photophysical properti… Show more

“…On the other hand, the singlet oxygen quantum yields of the iodine-containing complexes 34 (60–71%) were higher than those observed for the non-iodinated complexes 32 (46–49%). These experimental results are in agreement with DFT and TDDFT computational calculations [ 47 , 48 ] performed with non-substituted and iodine substituted phosphorus corrole complexes. The results demonstrated that iodine-substituted phosphorus corrole complexes, such as 34 , are good candidates to act as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy.…”

“…An interesting behavior is the ruffling of the corrole macrocycle in the iodine substituted systems (see Figure S1). This distortion is present in the corresponding solid state structure and was previously evidenced also in other substituted phosphorus corrole complexes . The differences found for the dihedral angles between theory and experiment can be due to the fact that measured and the estimated values are obtained in two different environments.…”

“…Corrole PDT can activate the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway through oxidation distribution by the singlet oxygen species and thus inhibit growth of tumor cells . Mitochondria destruction plays an important role in the process of apoptosis . In the early stage of apoptosis, the mitochondrial transmembrane potential is irreversibly reduced by the oxidation damage.…”
