Photonic Crystal Sensors Based on Porous Silicon

Abstract: Porous silicon has been established as an excellent sensing platform for the optical detection of hazardous chemicals and biomolecular interactions such as DNA hybridization, antigen/antibody binding, and enzymatic reactions. Its porous nature provides a high surface area within a small volume, which can be easily controlled by changing the pore sizes. As the porosity and consequently the refractive index of an etched porous silicon layer depends on the electrochemial etching conditions photonic crystals compo… Show more

“…This allows for their use as selective chemical sensors for volatile vapors present in the ambient atmosphere. Due to the fast development of the response signal and relatively easy optical readout of optical sensors, various materials and setups are under investigation for fast and chemically selective sensors [7][8][9]. Among the high variety of inorganic materials there are also promising biological or bioinspired materials for sensors [3,10].…”

“…Homogeneous sensing is related to refractive index modification and surface sensing is related with the thickness change of biomolecular layer which is immobilized on surface. The optical sensors designed for the detection and quantification of chemical, sensing of pressure, force, displacement, investigation of biochemicals and its interaction with the system of cellular are developed and it is still a field of extensive research [4,5]. The optical sensor based on 2D-sillicon (Phc) platform with group of air holes is more sensible because surface state of air holes modified the local electromagnetic fields of propagated wave.…”
