Photon storage inΛ-type optically dense atomic media. I. Cavity model

Abstract: In a recent paper [Gorshkov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 123601 (2007)], we used a universal physical picture to optimize and demonstrate equivalence between a wide range of techniques for storage and retrieval of photon wave packets in Λ-type atomic media in free space, including the adiabatic reduction of the photon group velocity, pulse-propagation control via off-resonant Raman techniques, and photon-echo-based techniques. In the present paper, we perform the same analysis for the cavity model. In particul… Show more

“…This will allow optimizing the storage and retrieval processes. In order to solve these equations, we will use the Laplace transformation in the time domain [16,38]. In this case two of the three differential equations are transformed into linear algebraic equations, and the solution of the third differential equation can be written in an explicit form.…”

“…A conservative estimate of the associated efficiency for the whole protocol (including the swapping) can be obtained by applying the photon's storage and retrieval efficiency twice [37]. This corresponds to the use of two separate MOTs for storing photons before and after swapping.…”
