Superconducting tunnel junctions X-ray detectors Ti/Nb/Al,AlO x /Al/ Nb(2)/NbN with killed Ti/Nb electrode was studied as a function of bias voltage, energy of the absorbed quantum, and thickness of the Nb(2) layer. The data was compared with a simple diffusion model including the losses of excess quasiparticles due to self-recombination. It was shown that increasing of the electrode thickness reduces the self-recombination contribution and improves the linearity of the detector response.

We have developed superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) x‐ray array detectors with a large detection area, high detection efficiency, and high counting rate. The STJ array detectors consist of 100 Nb/Al‐AlOx/Al/Nb STJs with a size of 200 × 200 µm. Each STJ has a 2 µm thick Ta absorber connected to the top Nb layer through a thin insulating layer. The absorbers act as an energy converter from high x‐ray energies to phonon energies, which are compatible with superconducting energy gaps. The array detectors realize a total detection area of 4 mm2 and a detection efficiency of ∼70% for x‐rays of energy up to 6 keV. In addition, it is expected that the spatial uniformity of the x‐ray signal outputs of the Nb‐based STJ by using the Ta absorber may be improved by a fast diffusion of quasiparticles in the Ta absorbers. In order to minimize cross talk, we have adapted a coplanar transmission waveguide (CPW) structure having an 8 µm wide signal Nb line, 7 µm wide ground gaps, 12 µm wide ground Nb lines, and a 50 Ω impedance. Advances in superconductor quantum and thermal detectors for analytical instruments

Analytical instruments or scientific instruments are indispensable for scientific research and industry. The analytical instruments require a detector that converts physical quantities to be measured (measurands) to electric signals. This Tutorial describes the basics of quantum and thermal detectors, the operation principles of superconductor detectors, and the ultimate performance of state-of-art analytical instruments with superconductivity. We still face fundamental issues, such as the classical Fano factor, the relation between energy gap and mean carrier creation energy, quasiparticle dynamics, and the intermediate state in the middle of superconducting transition; and engineering issues, such as the small sensitive area and the spatially nonuniform response. Nevertheless, enormous efforts have matured superconductor detectors, which enables us to solve the inherent problems of conventional analytical instruments. As an example of the analytical results, we describe x-ray spectroscopy and mass spectrometry at our institute by using three detector types: superconductor tunnel junction, transition edge sensor, and superconductor strip. Microwave kinetic inductance and metallic magnetic calorimetric types are also described. The analytical results may contribute to a wide range of fields, such as dentistry, molecular biology, energy-saving society, planetary science, and prebiotic organic molecules in space.
