Photolithographic patterning of highly conductive PEDOT:PSS and its application in organic light-emitting diodes

Abstract: Photolithographically patterned highly conductive (∼1400 S/cm) poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythio‐phene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) films are demonstrated as electrodes for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). With the assistance of hydrofluoroether (HFE) solvents and fluorinated photoresists, high‐resolution passive‐matrix OLEDs with PEDOT:PSS electrodes are fabricated, in which the OLEDs show comparable performance to those devices prepared on the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. This photolithographic p… Show more

“…In another example, we used the commercially available conductive polymer PEDOT:PSS, widely used in many applications. [6,51] A closely similar pattern as that obtained with PEDOT:PSTFSI is observed (Figure 4b). Adhesion energies for these two experiments, obtained using the wrinkling pattern, remain in the range of values measured for PEDOT:PSTFSI films (Figure 3e).…”

“…Development of patterning techniques for organic materials is another vein of research receiving a large amount of attention. These patterning techniques include laser cutting [3] , ink jet printing [4] , screen printing [5] , transfer printing [6] and photolithography [7][8][9][10][11] . Each of these methods has its respective advantages and disadvantages.…”

“…Using fluorinated provided by Orthogonal Inc., we systematically studied the influence of the patterning processes towards PEDOT:SS [26]. Both the conductivity and surface Journal of Nanomaterials 7 property of PEDOT:PSS remained the same after patterning using fluorinated materials.…”
