Photoinduced cycloaddition of biomass derivatives to obtain high-performance spiro-fuel

Abstract: A self-sensitized [2 + 2] cycloaddition process is developed to convert biomass-derived β-pinene and isophorone to high-performance spiro-fuel, which possesses high density and excellent cryogenic properties.

“…Preparation of high density and low freezing point biomass-based jet fuels from lignin is still to be developed. 164 Dai et al 165 applied Foucault alkylation reaction by utilizing lignin phenolic monomers, aldehydes and ketones intermediate small molecules (guaiacol and propionaldehyde) as raw materials, nally obtained long-chain alkane fuels. Nie et al 166 performed acid-catalyzed alkylation of lignin-derived phenols (phenol, anisole, guaiacol) with benzyl ether or benzyl alcohol.…”

“…[17] Ryan et al [289] generated a cyclobutane containing fuel blend via [2 + 2]-cycloaddition [290][291][292][293][294] of isophorone. Previous work on photochemical [2 + 2]-cycloaddition of isophorone with bio-derived olefins [295] demonstrated the benefit of isophorone's enone functionality, which allows it to absorb long wavelengths (> 310 nm), circumventing the need for a photosensitizer. Aqueous phase photochemical [2 + 2]-coupling of isophorone resulted in the selective formation of the headto-head isomer (Scheme 32).…”

“…Zou's group [18] synthesized spiro-fuel through a photoinduced self-sensitized [2 + 2] cycloaddition and hydrodeoxygenation process. Biomass-derived β-pinene and isophorone with no extra photosensitizer were irradiated under a high-pressure mercury lamp for 9 h; here, isophorone functions not only as a reactant but also as a photosensitizer because of the carbonyl group in its molecular structure.…”
