Abstract: Photodynamic therapy combined with injection of intravitreal ranibizumab was well tolerated and is effective. We found a stabilisation of VA in 96% of patients. Our short-term results are very promising. Further studies are necessary to show the long-term effect of the PDT and anti-VEGF combination therapy.

“…In the past, PDT was considered the standard therapy for patients with predominantly classic subfoveal CNV due to neovascular AMD [31,32] . On the other hand, our results are confirmed by the recently reported effectiveness of a combined therapy with PDT and intravitreal ranibizumab in occult CNVs [33,34] .…”

“…Additionally, cost-utility models proved these palliative treatments were highly cost-ineffective 14. The excitement created by the robust vision recovery after application of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibiting agents relegated PDT to an adjuvant role in combined treatment regimens by either increasing the efficacy of anti-VEGF agents14 or decreasing the frequency of intravitreal injections with the aim of reducing the cost 15…”
