Photodynamic Therapy and Possible Action Against Sars-Cov-2

Abstract: Photodynamic therapy is based on the selective photosensitization of a target tissue using a topically or systemically administered agent, which is activated by light, promoting an oxygen-dependent cytotoxic reaction. This study consisted of a literature review that selects articles that show the use of Photodynamic Therapy in health areas, contrsting its use as antimicrobial therapy and the use of action against Sars-Cov-2. In this bibliographic research, the use of photodynamic therapy used in microbial cont… Show more

“…Based on PDT's effectiveness against influenza viruses, 8 few studies have proposed the benefits of PDT in lung lesions of COVID-19 cases. 1 , 9 One of the theories states that photosensitization of viruses induces the glycoproteins removal from the viral surface, and the virus becomes virions non-infectious, thus without damage to the membrane.…”

“…In the study by these same authors, it was identified that ethanol (78 and 95%), 2propanol (70 and 100%), the combination of 2-propanol (45%) with 1-propanol (30%), glutardialdehyde (0.5 and 2.5%), formaldehyde (0.7 and 1%), povidone iodine (0.23 and 7.5%), sodium hypochlorite (minimum concentration of 0.21%) and hydrogen peroxide (0.5%) had satisfactory antimicrobial action against strains identical to human coronavirus. Currently there are several studies and searches to provide cleaning of difficult surfaces, as described in the work of Queiroz et al 22 , which suggests the possibility of using photodynamic therapy as a possible disinfecting action for surfaces and combating SARS-CoV-2. However, chemicals that are easily accessible to the population are more effective and faster tools, such as 70% alcohol and its high effectiveness in combating the new coronavirus.…”

“…A terapia fotodinâmica (TFD), consiste em uma terapia baseada na fotossensibilização seletiva de um tecido-alvo usando um agente administrado por via tópica ou sistêmica, que é ativado pela luz, promovendo uma reação citotóxica dependente de oxigênio (QUEIROZ et al, 2020a).…”
