Photochromic metal–organic frameworks for inkless and erasable printing

Abstract: A media for inkless and erasable printing has been developed using photochromic MOFs. Different coloured printing has been achieved by varying the structure of the MOF. The resultant printing has a good resolution and stability, is capable of being read both by human eyes and smart electronic devices and the paper can be reused for several cycles without any significant loss in intensity.

“…The pattern can then be completely erased through heating the sample above T g , returning the film to the full colored state. 31,32 This efficient pattern transfer is made possible by covalently binding the DASAs to polymers, since it eliminated phase separation and allows for the facile fabrication of uniform films. Furthermore, fine patterns with structural features below 100 μm could be achieved ( Figure S23).…”

“…Among the external stimuli that can be employed to operate molecular switches, light is a popular choice as it can be precisely controlled in both radiation time and wavelength without introducing additional chemical species in the systems . So far, several photoresponsive molecules, including azobenzene and diarylethene, have been successfully incorporated into MOFs and the properties of resulting materials can be modulated by photoirradiation.…”

“…Besides azobenzene and diarylethene, other photoresponsive molecules have also been immobilized into MOFs . For example, by using a two‐step postsynthetic modification method, D'Alessandro and co‐workers reported a spiropyran‐incorporated MOF, in which the spiropyran units can convert to the colored merocyanine state under UV irradiation.…”
