Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are excellent candidates for next-generation electronic materials. Unlike GNRs produced by "top-down" methods such as lithographical patterning of graphene and unzipping of carbon nanotubes that cannot reach structural perfection, the fabrication of structurally well-defined GNRs has been achieved by a "bottom-up" organic synthesis via solution-mediated or surface-assisted cyclodehydrogenation. Specifically, non-planar polyphenylene precursors were first "build up" from small molecules, and then "graphitized" and "planarized" to yield GNRs. However, fabrication of processable and longitudinally well-extended GNRs has remained a major challenge. Here we report a "bottom-up" solution synthesis of long (>200 nm), liquid-phase processable GNRs with well-defined structure and a large optical bandgap of 1.88 eV. Scanning probe microscopy demonstrates self-assembled monolayers of GNRs, and non-contact, time-resolved Terahertz conductivity measurements reveal excellent charge-carrier mobility within individual GNRs. The polyphenylene precursors are built up from small molecules, and thus their structures can be tailored within the capabilities of modern synthetic chemistry 15 . However, GNRs (>30 nm) produced by solution-mediated methods have been precluded from unambiguous structural characterization, i.e. microscopic visualization, due to their limited processability 9,12 . Lithium-ion batteries, which power portable electronics, electric vehicles, and stationary storage, have been recognized with the 2019 Nobel Prize in chemistry. The development of nanomaterials and their related processing into electrodes and devices can improve the performance and/or development of the existing energy storage systems. We provide a perspective on recent progress in the application of nanomaterials in energy storage devices, such as supercapacitors and batteries. The versatility of nanomaterials can lead to power sources for portable, flexible, foldable, and distributable electronics; electric transportation; and grid-scale storage, as well as integration in living environments and biomedical systems. To overcome limitations of nanomaterials related to high reactivity and chemical instability caused by their high surface area, nanoparticles with different functionalities should be combined in smart architectures on nano- and microscales. The integration of nanomaterials into functional architectures and devices requires the development of advanced manufacturing approaches. We discuss successful strategies and outline a roadmap for the exploitation of nanomaterials for enabling future energy storage applications, such as powering distributed sensor networks and flexible and wearable electronics.

Boundaries between distinct topological phases of matter support robust, yet exotic quantum states such as spin-momentum locked transport channels or Majorana fermions. The idea of using such states in spintronic devices or as qubits in quantum information technology is a strong driver of current research in condensed matter physics. The topological properties of quantum states have helped to explain the conductivity of doped trans-polyacetylene in terms of dispersionless soliton states. In their seminal paper, Su, Schrieffer and Heeger (SSH) described these exotic quantum states using a one-dimensional tight-binding model. Because the SSH model describes chiral topological insulators, charge fractionalization and spin-charge separation in one dimension, numerous efforts have been made to realize the SSH Hamiltonian in cold-atom, photonic and acoustic experimental configurations. It is, however, desirable to rationally engineer topological electronic phases into stable and processable materials to exploit the corresponding quantum states. Here we present a flexible strategy based on atomically precise graphene nanoribbons to design robust nanomaterials exhibiting the valence electronic structures described by the SSH Hamiltonian. We demonstrate the controlled periodic coupling of topological boundary states at junctions of graphene nanoribbons with armchair edges to create quasi-one-dimensional trivial and non-trivial electronic quantum phases. This strategy has the potential to tune the bandwidth of the topological electronic bands close to the energy scale of proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling or superconductivity, and may allow the realization of Kitaev-like Hamiltonians and Majorana-type end states.

Two-dimensional nanofluidic channels are emerging candidates for capturing osmotic energy from salinity gradients. However, present two-dimensional nanofluidic architectures are generally constructed by simple stacking of pristine nanosheets with insufficient charge densities, and exhibit low-efficiency transport dynamics, consequently resulting in undesirable power densities (<1 W m −2 ). Here we demonstrate MXene/Kevlar nanofiber composite membranes as high-performance nanofluidic osmotic power generators. By mixing river water and sea water, the power density can achieve a value of approximately 4.1 W m −2 , outperforming the state-of-art membranes to the best of our knowledge. Experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the correlation between surface charge of MXene and space charge brought by nanofibers plays a key role in modulating ion diffusion and can synergistically contribute to such a considerable energy conversion performance. This work highlights the promise in the coupling of surface charge and space charge in nanoconfinement for energy conversion driven by chemical potential gradients.

The discovery of graphene one decade ago has triggered enormous interest in developing two-dimensional materials (2DMs)-that is 2D allotropes of various elements or compounds (consisting of two or more covalently bonded elements) or molecular frameworks with periodic structures. At present, various synthesis strategies have been exploited to produce 2DMs, such as top-down exfoliation and bottom-up chemical vapor deposition and solution synthesis methods. In this review article, we will highlight the interfacial roles toward the controlled synthesis of inorganic and organic 2DMs with varied structural features. We will summarize the state-of-the-art progress on interfacial synthesis strategies and address their advancements in the structural, morphological, and crystalline control by the direction of the arrangement of the molecules or precursors at a confined 2D space. First, we will provide an overview of the interfaces and introduce their advantages and uniqueness for the synthesis of 2DMs, followed by a brief classification of inorganic and organic 2DMs achieved by interfacial synthesis. Next, the currently developed interfacial synthesis strategies combined with representative inorganic and organic 2DMs are summarized, including the description of method details, the corresponding structural features, and the insights into the advantages and limitations of the synthesis methods, along with some recommendable characterization methods for understanding the interfacial assembly of the precursors and crystal growth of 2DMs. After that, we will discuss several classes of emerging organic 2DMs with particular emphasis on the structural control by the interfacial synthesis strategies. Note that, inorganic 2DMs will not be categorized separately due to the fact that a number of review articles have covered the synthesis, structure, processing, and applications. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are provided regarding the future development of interface-assisted synthesis of 2DMs with diverse structural and functional control.

Water‐splitting electrolyzers that can convert electricity into storable hydrogen are a fascinating and scalable energy conversion technology for the utilization of renewable energies. To speed up the sluggish hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER), electrocatalysts are essential for reducing their kinetic energy barriers and eventually improving the energy conversion efficiency. As efficient strategies for modulating the binding ability of water‐splitting intermediates on electrocatalyst surface, the support effect and interface effect are drawing growing attention. Herein, some of the recent research progress on the support and interface effects in HER, OER, and overall water‐splitting electrocatalysts is highlighted. Specifically, the correlation between the electronic interaction of the constituent components and the electrocatalytic water‐splitting performance of electrocatalysts is profoundly discussed, with the aim of advancing the development of highly efficient water‐splitting electrocatalysts, which may eventually replace the noble‐metal‐based electrocatalysts and bring the practically widespread utilization of water‐splitting electrolyzers into a reality.

The chemical versatility of carbon imparts manifold properties to organic compounds, wherein magnetism remains one of the most desirable but also elusive 1. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, also referred to as nanographenes, show a critical dependence of electronic structure on the topologies of the edges and the π-electron network, which makes them model systems to engineer unconventional properties including magnetism. In 1972, Erich Clar envisioned a bowtie-shaped nanographene C38H18 2,3 , where topological frustration in the π-electron network renders it impossible to assign a classical Kekulé structure without leaving unpaired electrons, driving the system into a magnetically non-trivial ground state 4. Here, we report the experimental realisation and in-depth characterisation of this emblematic nanographene known as Clar's goblet. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spin excitation spectroscopy of individual molecules on a gold surface reveal a robust antiferromagnetic order with an exchange coupling of 23 meV, exceeding the Landauer limit of minimum energy dissipation at room temperature 5. Through atomic manipulation, we realise switching of magnetic ground states in molecules with quenched spins. Our results provide direct evidence of carbon magnetism in a hitherto unrealised class of nanographenes 6 , and prove a long-predicted paradigm where topological frustration entails unconventional magnetism, with implications for room-temperature carbon-based spintronics 7,8 .
