Photochemistry of pendimethalin

Abstract: Pendimethalin decomposed readily when irradiated in methanol a t wavelengths X 3 250 nm to form a number of products. In addition to the N-dealkylated intermediates, the principal products were 2-methyl-4,6-dinitro-5-[ (1-ethylpropyl)amino] benzaldehyde and 2-methyl-4,6-dinitro-5-[ (1-ethylpropy1)-amino] benzyl alcohol. The decomposition at sunlight wavelengths (A Z 290 nm) in methanol is relatively slower and also leads to N-dealkylation and arylmethyl oxidation. Neither acid nor alkali has an effect on the r… Show more

“…The fall in the absorbance at 355 nm is accompanied by a very weak absorption in the visible region that can be attributed to the formation of 4a,12a-anhydro-4-oxo-4-dedimethylaminotetracycline [10,11]: Tetracycline photodecomposes easily and is converted to many decomposition compounds [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. Side-chain degradations by deamination, desulfuration and dealkylation are typical of many photolytic processes [19][20][21][22]. Photodeamination occurs when tetracycline is irradiated with UV light [11][12][13].…”

“…It is dissipated by volatilization and chemical or biological degradation. [3] Pendimethalin is photo-labile [4] and photodegradation is rapid near the absorption maximum (l = 240 nm) [5] proceeding with dealkylazation, nitro-reduction and benzimidazole formation. [1] The contribution of volatilization to pendimethalin dissipation appears to depend on the type of support medium.…”

“…Dissipation half-life for surface-applied pendimethalin may be as short as 4 to 6 days due to volatilization and photochemical and other degradation processes. [5,6] The pH of the support medium also affects the products (though not rate) of photodegradation. Whereas volatile loss of pendimethalin from a thin layer of soil was much lower than similar losses of other dinitroaniline herbicides and accounted for about 1% of the total applied, [2] 13% loss from turfgrass within 5 days after application has been measured.…”
