Sintering SnO 2 under argon flow at temperatures in the range of 1350-1500°C causes the formation of wires, rods, and tubes on the sample surface. At high temperatures of the mentioned range, microwires with lengths of hundreds of microns are formed. At lower temperatures the formation of micro-and nanorods as well as micro-and nanotubes takes place. The influence of ball milling of the starting powder on the formation of tubes is investigated. The local cathodoluminescence measurements show a different defect structure in the tubes than in the sample background.

We utilized a vapor-liquid-solid growth technique to synthesize indium oxide, gallium oxide, and tin oxide nanowires using chemical vapor transport with gold nanoparticles as the catalyst. Using identical growth parameters we were able to synthesize single crystal nanowires typically 40-100 nm diameter and more than 10-100 microns long. The products were characterized by means of XRD, SEM and HRTEM. All the wires were grown under the same growth conditions with growth rates inversely proportional to the source metal vapor pressure. Initial experiments show that different transparent oxide nanowires can be grown simultaneously on a single substrate with potential application for multi-component gas sensors.

Pure SnO 2 and SnO 2 polycrystalline nanofibers doped with multiwall carbon nanotubes ͑MWCNTs͒ are synthesized by electrospinning followed by calcination in air at 500°C. The measurement results by sensors fabricated from these fiber mats at steady state show that the n-type SnO 2 /MWCNT nanofibers are able to detect carbon monoxide at 50 ppm at room temperature, while the pure SnO 2 nanofibers are insensitive up to 500 ppm. The MWCNT doped SnO 2 nanofibers have demonstrated their potentials for wearable room temperature gas sensors with low cost and power consumption.
