“…Iron-based binary chalcogenides such as iron pyrite (FeS 2 ; iron disulfide) and FeSe 2 can absorb a major fraction of electromagnetic radiation in the UV–visible to NIR region and thus found applications in many photocatalytic and electronic applications. The representative member FeS 2 has an indirect band gap of ≈1.0 eV (2-fold high photon absorption coefficient, 10 5 cm –1 more than silicon), high carrier mobility, and a theoretical power conversion efficiency of 28% and can be easily synthesized using earth-abundant chemicals like iron (∼5% of the earth’s crust) and sulfur (0.042% of the earth’s crust) sources such as sulfur powder, Na 2 S, thiourea, thioacetamide, etc. , FeS 2 has been widely investigated for solar cell application and heterojunction photocatalysis with numerous inorganic and organic semiconductors. Unfortunately, the performance of FeS 2 is plagued by prodigious charge recombination in grain boundaries and surface defects.…”

“…Consequently, the selection and development of this type of photocatalysts are urgently needed. Pyrrhotite (Fe 1−x S) with good optical absorption ability (˛= 6 × 10 5 cm −1 ) has been widely used in solar cell and photovoltaics [6,7], and developed as a photocatalyst for pollutant degradation [8][9][10]. But in mineral processing industry, the economic value of natural pyrrhotite was considered to be not as high as other sulfides.…”

“…Natural weathering of pyrite is estimated to occur at the rate of 36 Mt/yr (Garrels et al, 1973), involving 0.02 mol of electrons per square meter of land-surface area (Wehrli, 1990). In fact, pyrite has been successfully used as a low cost iron source for the Fenton-mediated oxidation of contaminants such as trichloroethylene (TCE) and organic components including nucleic acid (Bhar et al, 2013;Cohn et al, 2006).…”
