Photoabsorption spectrum of atomic sulphur

Abstract: The photoabsorption spectrum of atomic sulphur was obtained in the 1220-840 AA wavelength region on a 3m normal incidence spectrograph using the flash pyrolysis technique. The previously known photoionisation cross section in the 1200-940 AA range has been extended and confirmed on the relative scale. The new discrete line absorption data have enabled the authors to extend the principal series limiting on 4S to n=23. Of the seven Rydberg series limiting on 2D and 2P of S II reported recently, six could be iden… Show more

“…These Rydberg states are parts of series which converge to the third ionization limit at 13.400 eV. 13,27 The position and assignment of these states have been established previously by Joshi et al 27 and Gibson et al 13 Comparing Fig. 3͑b͒, a CIS spectrum for S + ͑ 2 D͒ ← S͑ 3 P͒ in the photon energy region 13.10-13.42 eV, with Fig.…”

“…2 Even-and odd-parity excited states of the atom have been extensively investigated by one-photon vacuum ultraviolet absorption [3][4][5] and photoionization 6 studies, and by (2ϩ1) resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization ͑REMPI͒ spectroscopy. [7][8][9][10][11] Recently we reported on a (2ϩ1) REMPI-photoelectron spectroscopy ͑REMPI-PES͒ study of the S atom, in which Rydberg states converging upon the lowest ionic state were investigated.…”

“…(2) includes improved values and accurate series formulas for the energy levels of He I. Eriksson gives new wavelengths for 146 N I lines in the vacuum-ultraviolet region 862-1837 A (10) . Recent data based on absorption observations in the vacuum ultraviolet include the photoionization spectrum of P I from threshold down £o 765 A (24), absorption spectra of S I (840-1220 A) (26) and CI I (940-1400 A) (29), and "subvalenceshell" absorption spectra of K I (400-600 A) (33) and Zn I (708-760 A) (72).…”
