Photo‐induced cytomorphologic changes in an advanced cancer phase I clinical trial

Abstract: Although further research is necessary, our preliminary results support the novel possibility that the IPLD photo-induces chaotic dynamics that modulate complex physiologically reparative bioeffects.

“…In January 2002, Lasers in Surgery Medicine published an article [2] in which we reported the cytomorphologic results of a phase I clinical trial in advanced cancer patients treated with a novel Infrared Pulsed Laser Device (IPLD) [3]. This study documented significantly increased apoptosis in neoplastic cells and no apparent changes in peripheral cells after IPLD treatment.…”

“…Other characteristics of the modulated beam include its relatively low duty cycle, wave-shape, and noise:signal ratio [3,8]. As described in our publications, the laser is applied non-invasively and its effects are local [8] and at a distance [2][3][4][5].…”

“…19 Evidence of anti-tumor activity was observed in 88.23% of patients. 19 Immune stimulation, 26 selective activation of programmed cellular death (apoptosis) in neoplastic cells, 27 and increased water content of tumor heterogeneities 28 were also documented. In addition, during the first interventional case of a patient with geographic atrophic age-related macular degeneration (AMD) associated with multi-infarct syndrome and severe ischemic disease, we observed amelioration of neurological symptoms, a confirmed single event of transitory color vision (not a hallucination), higher visual acuity, improved lens clarity, intraocular pressure decrease, electroretinogram (ERG) modifications and stable fluorescein angiography (FRG) 6 months post-IPLD treatment.…”

“…These results were attributed to the modulation by the IPLD of deeply rooted physicochemical and biological effects [6,10,11]. The objectives of the present investigation, conducted jointly with the above T 2 , 1/T 2 study, were to assess the general lattice tendency of the tissues studied as measured by T 1 and 1/T 1 data, and to study molecular-dynamics bioeffects, if any, as evaluated through t c values computed from the measured T 1 values and the T 2 data previously reported [6].…”
