Photo- and Metabolite Regulation of the Synthesis of Ribulose Bisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase and the Phycobiliproteins in the Alga Cyanidium caldarium

Abstract: Hitherto, the regulation of the synthesis of plastid proteins has mainly been studied in green algae and higher plants. For these plants it is now well established that the synthesis of plastid proteins is under the control of light and phytohormones and in the case of several algae under the control of a metabolizable carbon source in the culture medium (5,8,20,27). The enzyme RuBPCase3 is one ofthe most thoroughly studied plastid proteins in green algae and higher plants. It is composed of eight large and eig… Show more

“…In the eucaryotic algae Cyanidium caldarium (Steinmuller & Zetsche 1984) and Chlorogonium elongatum (Steinbib & Zetsche 1986) the synthesis of the RuBPCase protein and mRNA was promoted by illumination. Yet transcription of the rbcL-rbcS operon in a freshwater heterocystous cyanobacterium, Anabaena sp., appears to be constitutively expressed (Nierzwicki-Bauer et al 1984).…”

“…In several algae, the synthesis o f ribulose 1,5 bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rubisco) in the light is inhibited in the presence o f metabolizable carbon c o m p o u n d s [31,32,43,44], and in Chlorogonium, this control has been shown to be effected at the level o f m R N A for the nuclear-encoded small subunit [32,43].…”

“…light and acetate) are present simultaneously. The light-regulated expression of plastid genes is well documented by numerous reports (for reviews, see Mullet, 1988;Taylor, 1989;Herrmann et al, 1992), whereas only a limited number of papers are concerned with the regulatory role of metabolites on the expression of plastid genes (Boege et al, 1981;Westhoff and Zetsche, 1981;Pineau, 1982;Steinmiiller and Zetsche, 1984;Monroy and Schwartzbach, 1984;Steinbiss and Zetsche, 1986;Sheen, 1990).…”
