“…The reducing effect of zeolite on the amount of supernatant P after HCl addition in the present study may explain the drop in plasma iP seen in previous studies on zeolite supplementation in pregnant dry cows (Thilsing‐Hansen et al., 2002, 2003), in chickens (Scheideler, 1989; Watkins and Southern, 1992) and in swine (Ward et al., 1991). Long‐term phosphorus deprivation may lead to unwanted side‐effects such as anorexia (Gartner et al., 1982; Call et al., 1986; Wan Zahari et al., 1990), haemolytic anaemia (Kaneko et al., 1997), rachitic lesions (Miller et al., 1964) and decreased milk yield (Muschen et al., 1988). The zeolite‐induced hypophosphataemia must, therefore, be considered in relation to depth and duration when implementing zeolite supplementation in pregnant dry cows for milk fever prevention.…”
