Phosphodiesterase 4D and 5-lipoxygenase activating protein genes and risk of ischemic stroke in Sardinians

Abstract: Genetic factors contribute to the risk of ischemic stroke (IS). The phosphodiesterase-4D (PDE4D) and the 5-lipoxygenase activating protein (ALOX5AP) genes were identified as contributors to stroke in an Icelandic population. In an attempt to better define the contributory role of PDE4D and ALOX5AP genes to the risk of IS in humans, we carried out the present association study in a well-characterized, earlier published, genetically homogenous population from the island of Sardinia, Italy. In this cohort, includ… Show more

“…A detailed account of all these follow-up studies has already been reviewed Yoon et al, 2011). Inflammation has emerged as a key factor in the development of atherosclerotic lesions and in the progression to mature atheroma (Quarta et al, 2009). Further, inflammatory activation promotes thrombosis which is the most dreadful complication of atherosclerosis.…”

“…However, the results were controversial and conflicting. In particular, a significant association of ischemic stroke with ALOX5AP polymorphisms was found in Scottish[9], German[16], Chinese[14],[17], white American[18], Japanese[19], British[20], Spanish, and Portuguese[21] populations, whereas no evidence of a significant association was reported in different American[22][24], Swedish[25],[26], and Italian[27] cohorts.…”
