Phosphate-Solubilizing Enterobacter ludwigii AFFR02 and Bacillus megaterium Mj1212 Rescues Alfalfa’s Growth under Post-Drought Stress

Abstract: Drought stress is a prevalent environmental stress that adversely affects agricultural industries worldwide. In this study, bacterial isolates, AFFR02 and Mj1212, showed tolerance to polyethylene glycol-induced (PEG) drought stress (approximately 15%) and possess strong phosphate-solubilizing capacity. Moreover, we investigated the plant growth attributes, chlorophyll content, and ion uptake in alfalfa plants (Medicago sativa L) inoculated with isolates AFFR02 and Mj1212 under drought stress. We observed that … Show more

“…Microbial inoculation confers drought stress tolerance to the plants partly by an induction in the growth hormone levels and acquisition to soil mineral content. This was demonstrated in a study conducted by Kang et al [100], in which the alfalfa plants were inoculated with two Enterobacter ludwigii strains, namely AFFR02 and Mj1212. The inoculated plants were assessed under drought stress for hormones and mineral concentrations.…”

“…The prevalence of siderophore producers and phosphate solubilizers is very high in the isolated strains. In the case of phosphate solubility, this ability has been described as fundamental in drought-tolerant bacteria that are beneficial to plants, since such environments usually have very low availability [ 108 , 109 ]. Similarly, the production of siderophores under stress conditions has been related to a necessary mechanism in degraded or depleted land.…”

“…In another study conducted by Kang et al (2021) , two Enterobacter ludwigii strains, namely, AFFR02 and Mj1212, were isolated and inoculated into alfalfa plants; subsequently, their growth attributes, hormones, and mineral concentrations were assessed. The data showed that bacterial inoculation significantly rescued plants from drought stress.…”

“…The stalk diameter, fresh and dry biomass, and root/shoot elongation were all significantly higher in the treated plants than in the untreated plants. In addition, treated plants have higher levels of ABA, flavonoids, and minerals than those of untreated plants ( Kang et al, 2021 ).…”
