Phenotyping of immediate‐type food allergies based on 10 years of research: A latent class analysis

Abstract: Food allergy is a disease with diversity and variable natural history. Most patients acquire tolerance as they mature, whereas some patients have persistent symptoms. For example, 70%-80% of patients with allergy to hen's egg naturally acquire tolerance by the age of 6 years. 1 In addition, some patients may have food allergy to two or more antigens concomitantly. Among atopic disease patients, 57% reacted to two or three foods in oral food challenges (OFCs). 2 Patients can develop symptoms from accidental inge… Show more

“…Although CM and HE are common food allergens worldwide, especially in the population of young children, 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 10 , 13 , 14 , 15 there are no publications directly comparing their phenotypes. Our aim was to evaluate similarities and differences between these trigger groups.…”

“… 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 Though their prevalence is not very dynamic, the problem is still clinically relevant, even when most infants outgrow both of these food allergies. 8 , 9 Nevertheless, for children in whom the symptoms persist there is still a high risk of severe anaphylaxis. 10 Earlier data from the EAR database on food allergens, such as peanut‐induced anaphylaxis in children and teenagers, or wheat‐induced anaphylaxis in adults, suggest the impact of a given eliciting food on the anaphylaxis phenotype.…”

“…In this issue of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, Takahashi et al present the first report of longitudinal phenotypes of food allergies. 7 This study aimed to classify and characterize the long-term prognosis of the three most common immediate-type food allergies in Japan, hen's egg, cow's milk, and wheat. Using data from hospital records, children who presented to Sagamihara National Hospital for the assessment of food allergy prior to 12 months of age were included in the study.…”
