Phenotypic characterization ofLeishmaniaspp. causing cutaneous leishmaniasis in the lower Amazon region, western Pará state, Brazil, reveals a putative hybrid parasite,Leishmania(Viannia)guyanensis × Leishmania(Viannia)shawi shawi

Abstract: We phenotypically characterized 43 leishmanial parasites from cutaneous leishmaniasis by isoenzyme electrophoresis and the indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (23 McAbs). Identifications revealed 11 (25.6%) strains of Leishmania (V.) braziliensis, 4 (9.3%) of L. (V.) shawi shawi, 7 (16.3%) of L. (V.) shawi santarensis, 6 (13.9%) of L. (V.) guyanensis and L. (V.) lainsoni, 2 (4.7%) of L. (L.) amazonensis, and 7 (16.3%) of a putative hybrid parasite, L. (V.) guyanensis/L. (V.) shawi shawi. McAbs detected t… Show more

“…In this study, we found eight species that have already been correlated with leishmaniasis transmission: Bichromomyia reducta was found naturally infected with Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis Lainson & Shaw in state of Rondônia (FREITAS et al, 1989). Nyssomyia anduzei is considered a secondary vector but with a few importance in transmission of ACL (LAINSON et al, 1976;RANGEL & LAINSON, 2009 (JENNINGS et al, 2014;LAINSON et al, 1979) and is considered to be a putative vector. Nyssomyia yuilli yuilli was found naturally infected in Brazil, but without identification of the flagellate forms, and therefore transmission was only suspected (ARIAS et al, 1985).…”

“…amazonensis, ya que no solo está implicada en los casos humanos de leishmaniasis cutánea en el Neotrópico, sino que se ha señalada como agente etiológico en algunos casos de leishmaniasis muco-cutánea y, en especial, de leishmaniasis visceral atípica en humanos y caninos (45)(46)(47)(48)(49). En cuanto a los casos clínicos potencialmente asociados con Le.…”

“…These individuals might be hybrid between the two species possessing heterogeneous 28S rRNA gene derived from B. serioale and N. girellae, while the mtDNA was inherited from N. girellae. There have been reports on hybrids in several parasite taxa (King et al, 2015), including the protozoan Leishmania (Jennings et al, 2014), the trematode Schistosoma (Southgate et al, 1976;Tchuem Tchuenté et al, 1997;Huyse et al, 2009) and the monogenean Macrogyrodactylus (Barson et al, 2010). However, to our knowledge, there is no report on hybrid of capsalid monogenean and for between different genus.…”
