Introduction: Infections involving methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) remain a serious threat to hospitalized patients worldwide. MRSA is characterized by recalcitrance to antimicrobial therapy, which is a function not only of widespread antimicrobial resistance, but also the capacity to form biofilms. The present study evaluated the presence of genes encoding adhesion factors and the biofilmforming capacity in MRSA. Methodology: In this study, 53 isolates of MRSA, recovered from December 2010 to May 2014 in a mother and child hospital, CHU Mohamed VI in Marrakech, Morocco, were screened for the presence of bap and ica genes associated with biofilm formation, and for bbp, cna, ebpS, eno, fib, fnbA, fnbB, clfA, and clfB genes that encode microbial surface components recognizing adhesive matrix molecules (MSCRAMMs). The biofilm formation assay was performed in 96-well microtiter polystyrene plates. The presence of genes was determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: An association was found between icaD gene detection and biofilm formation; 100% of the strains harbored icaD and produced biofilm. None of the isolates harbored bap or bbp. Furthermore, 96.23% isolates were positive for fnbA, 60.37% for eno, 43.39% for clfA and clfB, 11.32% for cna, 9.34% for ebpS, 5.66% for fib, and 1.89% for fnbA. Conclusions: Our findings showed that the MRSA carriage in Marrakech children was high. The genetic variations of adhesion genes require further investigation.

Background:The polysaccharide intercellular adhesion (PIA) produced by Staphylococcus aureus is effective in the protection of isolates from outer harsh conditions and progress of infection. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the icaABCD genes encoding polysaccharide intercellular adhesion (PIA) between blood and wound isolates of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in Tehran. Patients and Methods: Forty-eight clinical isolates (including 30 blood and 18 skin wounds) were collected from patients and were identified. Next, mecA gene, SCCmec types and icaABCD genes were detected among blood and wound isolates of S. aureus by PCR assay and specific primers. Results: Nine (19%) out of 12 methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolates harbored SCCmec type III and three (6.2%) isolates harbored SCCmec type V. Prevalence of icaA, icaB, icaC and icaD in blood isolates was twenty-one (70%), fourteen (48%), nineteen (64%) and eighteen (60%), respectively; while the prevalence in wound isolates was as nine (50%), seven (39%), six (34%) and twelve (67%), respectively. Conclusions: These findings showed no significant difference regarding the presence of icaADBC genes between blood and wound isolates.

Aeromonas hydrophila strains isolated from different naturally polluted environments (ten from wastewater, six from bay used for aquaculture, eight from sea coast water and six from fish) were subjected to 13 antibiotics, and to four heavy metals (Copper, Cobalt, Zinc and Mercury) by using agar diffusion and agar dilution methods, respectively. In addition, effect of heavy metals on slime production was also investigated. Results of the antibiotic resistance agreed with those of heavy metals resistance, however, treated wastewater and bay strains were much tolerant than seawater and fish bacteria. The range of metal concentrations that was tolerated in the liquid media yielded information on the tolerance levels of A. hydrophila to different tested concentrations of metals. Copper and zinc were the best tolerated metals. Mercury was the most toxic component for all bacteria. Almost all A. hydrophila produced slime and a small number of strains have changed their morphotype under the heavy metals concentration. Our results have shown that Tunisian aquatic biotopes have a significant proportion of antibiotic and heavy metal resistant to A. hydrophila.
