Phenomenological psychological interviewing.

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to contextualize qualitative phenomenological psychological interviewing within the research tradition of psychology as a human science and how it relates to a phenomenological psychology. Qualitative interviewing is also historically contextualized within humanistic psychology and the qualitative research movement. A reply to a recent critique by Zahavi and Martiny (2019) is also included. In addition, some recent developments of qualitative phenomenological interviewing are acc… Show more

“…One way to collect data for a qualitative phenomenological study is to conduct a semi-structured interview, recently described as the Phenomenological Psychological Interview (PPI) (Englander 2020). Unlike many other qualitative, phenomenological methods (e.g., van Manen 1990;Davidson 2003;Smith and Osborn 2008;Giorgi 2009;Høffding and Martiny 2016), the PPI focuses explicitly on the method of data collection, i.e., the PPI is not a method for data analysis, and it could therefore principally serve as a data collection method for any qualitative, phenomenological examination.…”

“…The PPI is a clarification and explication of how phenomenological interviews are carried out as a data collection procedure in qualitative research, especially in relation to Giorgi's method, which is a method of data analysis only. In our particular context, the PPI can be used to explore psychopathological phenomena as they appear within the context of a patient's personal and social world (Englander 2020). Notably, a pilot study will precede the PPI as well as an extensive literature review to identify the themes to be explored and perhaps prepare possible questions (Englander 2012(Englander , 2020).…”

“…The use of such methods has recently gained great traction in phenomenology and cognitive science with the invention of Neurophenomenology (Varela ) and Microphenomenology (Petitmengin et al ). These various approaches discuss, also among themselves and against each other (Van manen ; Smith ; Zahavi ; Englander ), the kinds of questions science is generally concerned with: how exactly is the method implemented? Are its results reliable?…”

“…Carl Rogers (e.g. 1945;1961) and Steinar Kvale (1996) also put down foundational stones for phenomenologically oriented interviewing and since then, there has been a proliferation of phenomenologically inspired interview techniques, especially as applied in healthcare and therapy (Englander 2019;Van Manen 1990;Smith, Flowers, and Larkin 2009). The use of such methods has recently gained great traction in phenomenology and cognitive science with the invention of Neurophenomenology (Varela 1996) and Microphenomenology (Petitmengin et al 2019).…”
