The genus Scorzonera comprises nearly 200 species, naturally occurring in Europe, Asia, and northern parts of Africa. Plants belonging to the Scorzonera genus have been a significant part of folk medicine in Asia, especially China, Mongolia, and Turkey for centuries. Therefore, they have become the subject of research regarding their phytochemical composition and biological activity. The aim of this review is to present and assess the phytochemical composition, and bioactive potential of species within the genus Scorzonera. Studies have shown the presence of many bioactive compounds like triterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, flavonoids, or caffeic acid and quinic acid derivatives in extracts obtained from aerial and subaerial parts of the plants. The antioxidant and cytotoxic properties have been evaluated, together with the mechanism of anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and hepatoprotective activity. Scorzonera species have also been investigated for their activity against several bacteria and fungi strains. Despite mild cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines in vitro, the bioactive properties in wound healing therapy and the treatment of microbial infections might, in perspective, be the starting point for the research on Scorzonera species as active agents in medical products designed for miscellaneous skin conditions.

Halophytes adapting to live in salinized areas can activate some tolerance mechanism through signal compounds to cope with salinity. However, the role of co-activity of signal compounds in salt tolerance of halophytes has not yet fully understood. We researched the changes in signal compounds involved in the salt tolerance mechanism, including inorganic ions, osmoprotectants and substances related to antioxidant system in Scorzonera hieraciifolia with fleshy shoots extremehalophyte. The levels of calcium, magnesium, proline, soluble sugar, hydrogen peroxide, superoxide, ascorbate and glutathione increased when thickness of shoot tissues enhanced under excess salinity. There were 3.3-fold, 5-fold, 8-fold and 10-fold enhancements in the levels of inorganic ions (Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ), H 2 O 2 , ascorbate and glutathione in the shoots treated with excess salinity, respectively. Contents of sodium, potassium and chlorine, and antioxidant enzyme activities also increased in the salinized shoots. The increases in antioxidant enzyme activities were consistent with increases in their protein contents according to Western blot analysis. The results suggest that extraordinary salt tolerance capacity in Scorzonera hieraciifolia can improve by modulated accumulations of signal compounds, especially calcium, magnesium, osmoprotectants, reactive oxygen species and antioxidant substances. Moreover, massive induction of antioxidant enzymes can make strong contributions to salinity tolerance of S. hieraciifolia.

Yağ asidi komposizyonu, Doymuş yağ asitleri, Esansiyel yağ asitleri Öz: Scorzonera cinsi (Teke Sakalı), çok sayıda doğal biyoaktif bileşiğin kaynağı olarak bilinir. Mevcut çalışmada, üç Scorzonera taksonunun (S. hiericifolia Hayek., S. hispanica L. ve S. tomentosa L.) toprak üstü ve kök kısımlarından elde edilen yağların yağ asidi komposizyonlarının gaz kromatografi cihazı kullanılarak belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Doymuş (SFA), tekli doymamış (MUFA) ve çoklu doymamış (PUFA) yağ asitlerinin seviyeleri sırasıyla % 42,99-80,40; % 4,05-30,51 ve % 15,43-32,68 olarak belirlenmiştir. En yüksek SFA içerikleri S. tomentosa'nın toprak üstü kısmı ile S. hispanica'nın kök kısımlarında tespit edilmiştir. MUFA bakımından en yüksek yüzde S. tomentosa'nın toprak üstü ve köklerinden elde edilen yağda belirlenmiştir. En yüksek PUFA seviyesi S. hieraciifolia'nın toprak üstü ile S. tomentosa'nın kökünde gözlenmiştir. Çalışılan türlerin SFA içerikleri MUFA ve PUFA içeriklerinden daha yüksektir. Türlerin yağ asidi içeriği açısından farklılıklarını belirlemek, bitkilerden farklılığa hangi yağ asitlerinin neden olduğunu belirlemek ve bitki kısımları arasındaki yağ asidi bileşimlerinin farklılıklarını belirlemek için elde edilen sonuçlar çok değişkenli istatistiksel yöntemlerle değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmamızın sonuçları belirtilen Scorzonera türlerinin yağ asidi kompozisyonları üzerine yapılacak olan yeni çalışmalara bir başlangıç noktası oluşturacaktır.
