Phenolic Compound Content, Profiles and Antioxidant Activities of Amaranthus Hybridus (Pigweed), Brachiaria Brizantha (Upright Brachiaria) and Panicum Maximum (Guinea Grass)

Abstract: Amaranthus hybridus, Brachiaria brizantha and Panicum maximum are wild cereal grains that have been consumed mainly in times of drought especially in the Manicaland Province, which is the worst-hit province in Zimbabwe whenever there are droughts. Methanolic extract solutions were prepared from sun-dried A. hybridus, B. brizantha and P. maximum grains. We studied the phenolic compound content and antioxidant properties including high-performance liquid chromatography, 1-diphenyl-2-pierylhydrazyl radical scaven… Show more

“…To compare this activity with those of other plants described in the literature, the antioxidant activity determinate by DPPH test was expressed as IC 50 . The IC 50 values of S. rebaudiana extracts were 2.9, 5.0 and 9.26 mg/mL respectively for E.O, WE and MWE; compared to Becium dhofarense Sebald (IC 50 : 11.0 mg/mL), Ficus lutea Vahl (IC 50 : 11.9 mg/mL), Cordia (Chitindingue, Ndhlala, Chapano, Benhura, & Muchuweti, 2006), these results proved that the extracts from S. rebaudiana leaf possess significant antioxidant properties. For these extracts and this oil, the medicinal benefit derived from their use may include prevention of oxidative skin damage and subsequent disease progression.…”

“…hybridus has great potential for the treatment of coliform urinary tract infection as indicated by the current study. Chitindingu et al (2007) isolated antioxidant and phenolic substances from A. hybridus which are known to have anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) properties. Thus the use of this leafy vegetable is recommended for combating opportunistic related infections in HIV/AIDS patients.…”

“…Combrestatins and flavonoids have been isolated from Terminalia sp. (Garcez et al 2006), terpenoids, glycosides, ajugarin I and II have been isolated from the Lamiaceae family (Matu & van Staden 2003, Manguro et al 2006), antioxidants and phenols from A. remota (Chitindingu et al 2007), an antifungal thaumatin-like protein from Cassia didymobotrya (Vitali et al 2006) and saponins isolated from E. leptostachya (Ka-reru et al 2008).…”
