Phenolic Composition and Antioxidant Properties of 2 Taxa of Macadamia Flowers

Abstract: This study investigated the differences in phenolic composition and antioxidant properties among 4 extracts (eg,70% acetone, 70% methanol, 70% ethanol, and water) of 2 taxa of Macadamia flowers (“Nanya No.2” and “HAES695” cultivars). The results showed that the phenolic compounds and antioxidant properties of the extracts were taxa- and solvent-dependent. “Nanya No.2” flowers possessed remarkably more phenolics and flavonoids, with more robust antioxidant activities than “HAES695”. The 70% acetone extract exhi… Show more

“…Hallman [36] studied the polyphenol content in pink and white Robinia flowers and found that pink flowers contain more phytochemicals than white flowers. Another study conducted by Yang and Lu [37] revealed that white petal Macadamia flowers contain higher polyphenols and antioxidants than pink petal flowers. These unique phenomena occur based on the availability of different active secondary metabolites in each species.…”

“…In biochemistry, 2,2 0 -azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) is a compound used to simply quantify the amount of hydrogen peroxide in a sample. Using this compound, ABTS radical scavenging activity analysis was performed according to the method reported by Yang & Lu (2022). The ABTS radical cation (ABTS •+ ) solution was prepared by mixing 7 mmol/L of ABTS and 2.45 mmol/L of potassium persulfate and incubating it at room temperature for 16 h in the dark.…”
