Phase Evolution of Ti3SiC2 Annealing in Vacuum at Elevated Temperatures

Abstract: The thermal decomposition of Ti 3 SiC 2 in vacuum furnace up to 1500°C has been investigated. The results show that the mild decomposition of Ti 3 SiC 2 commences at 1300°C and the higher the holding temperature, the larger the volatilization of Si atoms. The Ti 3 SiC 2 decomposition occurs simultaneously on the surface and in the bulk. Four phases coexist at 1400°C and 1450°C and the Ti 5 Si 3 C x phase appears in the bulk and/or surface. Diffusion distance, rate, and volatilization of Si contribute to the po… Show more

“…4a. Ti 3 SiC 2 has been reported to decompose, at temperatures of 1300 • C and higher in vacuum, into TiC y , with Ti 5 Si 3 C x as an intermediate phase [32]. However, in this work, this was not observed.…”

“…Similar to metal, Ti 3 SiC 2 is electrically and thermally conductive, is relatively soft, and can be easily machined with standard tools. Similar to ceramic, Ti 3 SiC 2 is elastically stiff with relatively low hardness and light weight and can resist thermal shock, corrosion, and chemical attack [1][2][3][4][5]. Several researchers have studied the two-stage sliding friction and wear process using Ti 3 SiC 2 against various counterparts under dry sliding condition or its tribological behaviors under various solutions.…”

“…Within comparative sessions, the team was presented with various attributes that had extracted from a careful review of literature . Then, seven attributes for selecting the carbon source were obtained: • Cost ( A 1 ): Cost of carbon precursors in sol‐gel synthesis of TiC nanopowders plays a very significant role in selection of the best of them.…”
