Phase equilibrium and physical properties of biobased ionic liquid mixtures

Abstract: Protic ionic liquid crystals (PILCs) obtained from natural sources are promising compounds due to their peculiar properties and sustainable appeal. However, obtaining PILCs with higher thermal and mechanical stabilities for product and process design is in demand and studies on such approaches using this new IL generation are still scarce. In this context, this work discloses an alternative way for tuning the physicochemical properties of ILCs by mixing PILs. New binary mixtures of PILs derived from fatty acid… Show more

“…Literature has shown the ability of ILs on modifying the interfacial tension of colloidal systems based on their amphiphilic nature, which can be estimated by CMC, ,,,, interfacial tension, and zeta potential measurements, , as well as their interaction as cosurfactants with nonionic emulsifiers. , Such surfactant ability of some ILs can be attributed to their amphiphilic character based on their ionicity (hydrophilicity) and their lipophilic moiety. Thus, ILs, especially those derived from sodium, chlorate, bromate, imidazolium, pyridinium, and phosphonium, have been considered as new groups of surfactants, cosurfactants, detergents, or soaps.…”

“…Although [Ch][C 18 OO] presented good performance to form emulsions, because it presented small droplet size after preparation (∼1 μm), it also presented a higher viscosity and droplet size after 7 days of storage (Figure 3, Table 1). Literature has shown the ability of ILs on modifying the interfacial tension of colloidal systems based on their amphiphilic nature, which can be estimated by CMC, 6,16,26,27,29 interfacial tension, and zeta potential measurements, 7,30 as well as their interaction as cosurfactants with nonionic emulsifiers. 8,9 Such surfactant ability of some ILs can be attributed to their amphiphilic character based on their ionicity (hydrophilicity) and their lipophilic moiety.…”

“…This has been conrmed by recently published studies regarding binary mixtures of protic ILs derived from fatty acids, which presented a marked nonideal melting prole with the formation of solid solution. 33 Seven bio-ILs were obtained with high yields, as presented in Table 1. This group includes novel bio-ILs which comprise e.g.…”

“…The ILs were obtained through acid-base reaction 14,18 The encapsulation of eucalyptol was performed through an emulsification process in two steps. 1% of IL (concentration based on Brazilian food legislation 19 ) was dissolved in the aqueous phase, and then 1% of rosemary EO containing eucalyptol was gradually added as first step by using Ultra Turrax (U).…”
