Phase-change hybrids for thermo-responsive sensors and actuators

Abstract: Highly advanced phase-change hybrids (PCHs), which consist of a phase-change material and conjugated polymer, were developed for new sensor and actuator applications. PCH films with excellent characteristics were obtained simply by depositing various molten paraffin waxes (PWs) in situ onto poly(diphenylacetylene) (PDPA) films with extremely large fractional free volumes. The phase-change enthalpy of the PWs in the hybrid films was quite high and remained constant over prolonged use. The PCH films underwent cr… Show more

“…The early studies showed that polydiphenylacetylene (PDPA)-paraffi n wax composites display a signifi cant decrease in the fl uorescence intensity near the melting temperature of the wax upon heating. [ 49,50 ] The temperature-dependent colorimetric response of the PCDA-derived PDA-wax composite was also probed by using Raman spectroscopy. In the Raman spectrum ( Figure 4 ), bands associated with conjugated alkyne-alkene groups in the bluephase PDA appear at 2082 (C C) and 1451 cm −1 (C C), respectively.…”

“…In [200], a paraffin-based valve suitable for use in a bendable lab-on-a-foil system is presented, together with an assessment of different actuator layer concepts for generation of large-volume strokes in layered modular systems. The major drawback of PCAs, the slow response time, may be overcome with the help of newly developed PCA composites, for example, compounds of paraffin and vertically aligned CNT films designed for large stroke actuators [201] or hybrids of PCA materials and conjugated polymers for fast thermomechanical actuation [202].…”

“…Very unique functional PCM-based hybrid materials, which act as a thermoresponsive sensor or a thermomechanical actuator, were recently developed by our research group. 108 Hybrid films were prepared simply by depositing various paraffin waxes in situ onto the p-C1-PDPA film. The phase-change enthalpy of the paraffin waxes therein was quite high and remained constant over prolonged use.…”
