Pharmacokinetics of ceftiofur sodium in exotic and domestic avian species

Abstract: The pharmacokinetics of ceftiofur sodium were determined in domestic chicks, turkey poults, adult cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus), and adult orange-winged Amazon parrots (Amazona amazonica) after subcutaneous (chicks and turkey poults and intramuscular (i.m.) dosing (cockatiels and Amazon parrots). Turkey poult data were best fit to a single exponential model with disappearance half-lives (t1/2) of 8.6, 7.4 and 5.6 h after doses of 0.12, 0.24 and 0.48 mg ceftiofur free acid equivalents (CFAE)/poult, respect… Show more

“…This can be concluded from the comparisons of kinetic study results with m.i.c. data, on the one hand, and from experimental therapy studies of infections with bacterial strains of different sensitivities on the other (Brown, 1996;Ziv et al, 1997;Tell et al, 1998;Knoll et al, 1999). However, the latter type of studies has never been performed with O. rhinotracheale.…”

“…Ceftiofur has been world-widely used for cattle to treat bovine respiratory disease associated with Pasteurella hemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Haemophilus somnus, for swine to treat pleuropneumonia caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia, and for chickens to treat fowl typhus and diarrhea associated with Salmonella Garinarium and Escherichia coli [10,18].…”

“…Tell et al [18] investigated pharmacokinetics of ceftiofur sodium in domestic chicks, cockatiels, and Amazon parrots after subcutaneous (chicks) and intramuscular (cockatiels and Amazon parrot) dosing. At 8 hr after a single subcutaneous injection at the dose of 0.16 mg/chick, the concentration of ceftiofur in plasma of chicks was 0.58 µg/g.…”

“…These inconsistencies may be due to the differences in eating habits and/or physiological status. Following a single intravenous injection of ceftiofur sodium, the Cl was estimated as 14.14 ml hr ‐1 kg ‐1 , which was lower than the results reported in Nile tilapia (1,640 ml hr ‐1 kg ‐1 ; Khalil et al, ), cockatiels (678 ml hr ‐1 kg ‐1 ; Tell et al, ), Amazon parrots (228 ml hr ‐1 kg ‐1 ; Tell et al, ), foals (74.4–85.3 ml hr ‐1 kg ‐1 ; Meyer et al, ), and lactating goats (40 ml hr ‐1 kg ‐1 ; Fernandez–Varon et al, ).…”
