Pharmacogenetics of Antidepressant Treatment in Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder: An Update and Implications for Clinicians

Abstract: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder with high genetic influence. Antidepressants such as serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are widely accepted as the first-line medications for OCD; however, approximately 50% of OCD patients show poor response. Personalized medicine utilizing genetic testing has recently received much attention because the variability of antidepressant response and tolerability are partly due to an individual's genetic variations. This has led to researchers… Show more

“…The association between polymorphisms of SLC1A1 and pharmacologic treatment outcome has been supported by previous studies (Real et al, 2012;Brandl et al, 2012;Zai et al, 2014). In our study, we found a significant association was observed between the rs301430 genotype and treatment outcome.…”

“…The studies of Tibrewal et al (2010) and Chabana et al (2004) have failed to find a relationship between the L allele and OCD. A study of Bolch et al found a strong relationship between the L allele and childhood onset of OCD (Zai et al, 2014). However, some positive reports were published in the gender-based studies; they found an association between the L allele and OCD and this relationship showed a female-based genetic effect .…”

“…There are important arguments that serotonin systems regulate obsessive compulsive symptoms. SRIs have demonstrated efficiency in the treatment of OCD and are considered as first-line pharmacotherapy (Schechter et al, 2005;Pizarro et al, 2014;Zai et al, 2014).…”

“…Obsessive‐Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder which is the fourth most common mental disorder worldwide . Patients with OCD are not able to control the continuous flow of disturbing and irrational thoughts (obsessions) that enter their mind, causing stress and leading them to behave in a particular repetitive manner (compulsions) to neutralize the undesired impulses (obsessions).…”
