Photocatalytic degradation from Photocatalytic Nanomaterials composites is a great possibility to investigate the energy shortage and potential natural risks determined by nanomaterial composites. Graphite oxide and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were added to Polyacrylonitrile nanofibers to improve the photocatalytic activity and mechanical qualities of the composite nanofibers. Under visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes-methylene blue dye from the simulated industrial wastewater has been studied. Electrospinning is used to create polyacrylonitrile nanofibers, which are then chemically cross-linked with graphite oxide and CQDs to get efficient photocatalytic degradation. In-depth analysis has been done on every parameter relating to dyes and the photocatalytic degradation mechanism.Using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, the surface sensitization and morphological changes of the synthesized composite nanofibers were investigated. With a 100% degradation efficiency for MB after 25 min, sensitized CQDs with graphite oxide demonstrated better efficiency in the degradation of MB when compared with pristine elements. The ideal catalytic conditions, including pH and starting organic dye content, were discussed. Methylene blue dye degraded more effectively as initial concentrations dropped. The reaction rate slows down at a pH of 7. The proposed composite demonstrated high stability and reusability for MB dye, and the costcontrolling method can be utilized in advanced applications.

Paracetamol is one of the most used pharmaceuticals worldwide, but due to its widespread use it is detected in various environmental matrices, such as surface and ground waters, sediments, soils or even plants, where it is introduced mainly from the discharge of wastewater and the use of sewage sludge as fertilizer in agriculture. Its accumulation in certain organisms can induce reproductive, neurotoxic or endocrine disorders, being therefore considered an emerging pollutant. This study reports on the isolation, from sewage sludge produced in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), of bacterial strains capable of degrading paracetamol. Up to 17 bacterial strains were isolated, but only two of them, identified as Pseudomonas stutzeri CSW02 and Pseudomonas extremaustralis CSW01, were able to degrade very high concentrations of paracetamol in solution as a sole carbon and energy source, and none of them had been previously described as paracetamol degraders. These bacteria showed the ability to degrade up to 500 mg L−1 of paracetamol in only 6 and 4 h, respectively, much quicker than any other paracetamol-degrader strain described in the literature. The two main paracetamol metabolites, 4-aminophenol and hydroquinone, which present high toxicity, were detected during the degradation process, although they disappeared very quickly for paracetamol concentrations up to 500 mg L−1. The IC50 of paracetamol for the growth of these two isolates was also calculated, indicating that P. extremaustralis CSW01 was more tolerant than S. stutzeri CSW02 to high concentrations of paracetamol and/or its metabolites in solution, and this is the reason for the much lower paracetamol degradation by S. stutzeri CSW02 at 2000–3000 mg L−1. These findings indicate that both bacteria are very promising candidates for their use in paracetamol bioremediation in water and sewage sludge.

An enzyme-linked fluorescent immunoassay (ELFIA) method has been developed for the quantitative analytical determination of the herbicide active ingredient glyphosate in environmental matrices (surface water, soil, and plant tissues). Glyphosate, as a ubiquitous agricultural pollutant, is a xenobiotic substance with exposure in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems due its extremely high worldwide application rate. The immunoassay developed in Project Aquafluosense is part of a fluorescence-based instrumentation setup for the in situ determination of several characteristic water quality parameters. The 96-well microplate-based competitive immunoassay method applies fluorescence signal detection in the concentration range of 0–100 ng/mL glyphosate. Application of the fluorescent signal provides a limit of detection of 0.09 ng/mL, which is 2.5-fold lower than that obtained with a visual absorbance signal. Beside the improved limit of detection, determination by fluorescence provided a wider and steeper dynamic range for glyphosate detection. No matrix effect appeared for the undiluted surface water samples, while plant tissues and soil samples required dilution rates of 1:10 and 1:100, respectively. No cross-reaction was determined with the main metabolite of glyphosate, N-aminomethylphosphonic acid, and related compounds.
