Show more

“…Also the zwitterion derived from serine (33) forms similar vesicles. 39 Vesicle formation can be triggered by pH changes due to protonation or deprotonation of the zwitterion as the resulting cation or anion, respectively, is not self-complementary any more. Related zwitterions derived from the aromatic amino acids phenylalanine or tryptophan behave quite differently with respect to solubility and aggregation mode.…”

“…However, this approach allows for the regulation of the microscopic structure and macroscopic properties by tuning the molar ratio of the two components, in contrast to single‐component self‐assembly . Furthermore, the components might possess functionalities that respond to external stimulus such as temperature, metal ions, light, pH, or solvent, which allow for switching back and forth between different types of nanostructures.…”

“…The same behavior is observed when first one equivalent of NaOH is added to the original vesicles (d) and then the solution is neutralized again with one equivalent of HCl (e). Reproduced from reference [60] with permission. niques.…”

“…The properties of the vesicles from both compounds were essentially identical. [60] As compound 19 is only zwitterionic in a small pH range, the addition of acid or base was expected to destroy these aggregates. This indeed could be confirmed by AFM imaging: after addition of one equivalent of acid, vesicles no longer could be detected.…”
