pH-Responsive Self-Healing Anticorrosion Coating Based on a Lignin Microsphere Encapsulating Inhibitor

Abstract: In this work, we offered a facile strategy to produce lignin microspheres (LMS) with loading of benzotriazole (BTA) inhibitors, which were released as the pH changed. The morphological and compositional characterizations demonstrated that the BTA inhibitors were efficiently encapsulated in the LMS whose load was up to 15.5 wt %. Tests of crossed scratches of coatings indicated that the LMS@BTA/pure waterborne epoxy resin (WEP) had a good self-healing property. By the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy test… Show more

“…Therefore, if the local pH decreases due to the corrosion process, the BTA inhibitor is expected to be released at a higher rate, and the corrosion resistance will increase. There are reports in the literature on the use of various materials such as SiO 2 , nanoporous chitosan hybrid particles, lignin microspheres, and zeolitic imidazole framework as BTA carriers. The SiO 2 /BTA system with the loading efficiency of 2.5 wt % can release BTA in a different range of pH values from 3.0 to 9.0 .…”

“…The larger the | Z | value of the Bode mode plot at f = 0.01 Hz, the smaller the breakpoint frequency corresponding to 45° in the Bode phase and the larger the diameter of the semicircular arc in the Nyquist diagram. This indicates that the corrosion resistance is greater for the coating. , The Bode module curves of the EP/lecithin/SiO 2 /HEDP 40:2:4:1 , EP/lecithin/SiO 2 /HEDP 40:1:4:2 , and EP/lecithin/SiO 2 /HEDP 40:2:4:2 coatings are shown in the Appendix section (Figure S1). The EP, EP/lecithin/SiO 2 /HEDP 40:2:4:1 , and EP/SiO 2 /HEDP 40:4:1 coatings were soaked in a 3.5 wt % NaCl aqueous solution at 25 °C for 256 h, and electrochemical tests were performed on the shielding performance of these coatings.…”

“…The peaks at 2937 and 2843 cm −1 were attributed to the stretching vibration of methyl (–CH 3 ) and methylene (–CH 2 ) groups. [ 56 ] The peaks at 1614, 1506, and 1453 cm −1 can be attributed to the typical aromatic skeletal vibrations of benzene rings. [ 57 ] The peaks at 1360 and 1131 cm −1 showed the existence of syringyl units.…”
