pH-Controlled fluorescence switching in water-dispersed polymer brushes grafted to modified boron nitride nanotubes for cellular imaging

Abstract: pH-Switchable, fluorescent, hybrid, water-dispersible nanomaterials based on boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and grafted copolymer brushes (poly(acrylic acid-co-fluorescein acrylate) – P(AA-co-FA)) were successfully fabricated in a two-step process. The functionalization of BNNTs was confirmed by spectroscopic, gravimetric and imaging techniques. In contrast to “pure” BNNTs, P(AA-co-FA)-functionalized BNNTs demonstrate intense green fluorescence emission at 520 nm. Under neutral or alkaline pH values, P(AA-co-… Show more

“…For this, PNs prepared using PMAA as a polymeric matrix can perform as a pH-sensitive nano-carrier in aqueous medium. This fact improves the potential interest in prepared PNs because the use of water-dispersed pH-sensitive sensors are of current interest, as was reported elsewhere [ 11 ].…”

“…[117][118] Fluorescein-based polymers are pH-sensitive polymers that exhibit fluorescence in response to changes in pH. pHswitchable, fluorescent, hybrid, water-dispersible nanomaterials based on boron nitride nanotubes and grafted poly(acrylic acid-co-fluorescein acrylate) copolymer brushes were successfully manufactured in work [119] (Figs. 11a and b).…”

“…There is a drawback concerning this type of reinforced polymeric material. Sometimes, there is no good compatibility between the polymer and the reinforcement, thus reducing the material properties to be obtained [ 108 , 109 , 110 ]. The use of additives to improve material properties for processing and application is common practice in sheet molding compounds for traditional injection molding applications [ 111 , 112 ].…”
