Petroleum Potentiality and Petrophysical Evaluation of the Middle-Jurassic Sargelu Formation, Northern Iraq

Abstract: This study indicates the source rock evaluation and reservoir properties of the Middle-Jurassic Sargelu Formation in two selected sections (well Atrush-3 and Warte outcrop) northern Iraq. The well log data display that the shale includes 30% of the upper part of the Sargelu Formation. This extraordinary ratio of shale content has negative impacts on the reservoir properties in this part of the formation. The lower part of the formation has a good porosity ratio that reaches 15% as calculated from the log data.… Show more

“…Well log is the main tool used to describe the petrophysical characteristics including lithology, porosity, water saturation, and permeability (Albeyati et al, 2021). Many researchers have been studied the petrophysical properties of carbonate rocks in several oil reservoirs in Iraq (Al-Majid, 2019;Al-Jawad and Kreem, 2016;Abdulrahman et al, 2018;Al-Jaberi and Al-Mayyahi, 2018;Mamaseni, 2020). Core data is of great importance in knowing the petrophysical properties of geological formations with high accuracy and enhancing well log information.…”

“…In this study, an attempt is made to evaluate potentiality of the Sargelu Formation as a source rock from the well Tq-1 that has penetrated the formation in the Taq Taq Oilfield. Different tools are used in the evaluation process and the results compared with work previously done on the same formation in nearby areas (Ahmed, 2001;Pitman et al, 2004;Al-Ahmed, 2006;Al-Ameri et al, 2014;Abdula, 2015;English et al, 2015;Fatah and Mohialdeen, 2016;Najaf, 2018, Hakimi et al, 2018Kobraei et al, 2019;Mamaseni, 2020).…”
