“…The presence of adventitious viruses in cell cultures is well-recognized as one of the main concerns in the manufacture of human and animal biological products. FBS is routinely used as a medium supplement and may harbor many viral agents, one of the most common being NCP-BVDV (27). The only previous study carried out to determine pestivirus contamination in Argentine FBS was published in 2000, which reported that 100 out of 200 (50%) FBS batches analyzed were BVDV-positive.…”

“…Other peptides -AKIQDKEGIPPDQQR and LIFAGKQLEDGR -matched down-stream segments of the polypeptide chain of both BVDV and human ubiquitin confirming the existence and localization in this polypeptide region. BVDV is a common contaminant of bovine biological products (10,11). To test the contamination of brain extracts by BVDV from reagents we submitted the extraction solution containing sodium deoxycholate, porcine trypsin and inhibitors to the same analytical protocol used for protein extraction, except acetone precipitation to avoid protein losses.…”

“…These cases have primarily involved bovine viral diarrhea virus in veterinary vaccines. [6] However, there have been a number of reported cases of viral contaminants detected in biological bulk harvest samples. The viral contaminants attributed to the use of FBS have included epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus, Cache Valley virus, reovirus type 2, and vesivirus 2117.…”
