Pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables from Pakistan: a review of the occurrence and associated human health risks

Abstract: The main objective of the review is to document, assess and analyze the results of the previously reported data on levels of different pesticides in selected fruits and vegetables from Pakistan. The findings of the previous studies clearly indicated that more than 50 % of the samples were contaminated with organophosphate, pyrethroids and organochlorine pesticides. Many studies reported that among fresh fruits and vegetables tomato, apple, melon, mango, grapes, and plum crossed the FAO/WHO permissible limits f… Show more

“…In Africa, studies conducted on lettuces and tomatoes showed no risks for the population in Kumasi, Ghana [30]. In the case of residues of methomyl, the HRI value was 0.58, which presents no risks to the exposed population [36]. The hazard index was a measurement of potential risks of adverse health effects from a mixture of pesticide residues in the vegetables evaluated in this study.…”

“…They reported that in 4% of the fruit samples, in 2% of the vegetable samples from conventional farming, and in 2% of samples from organic farming were found to contain pesticide residues above the MRLs. In contrast, data from developing countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh and China, revealed that > 50 % of fruits and vegetables were contaminated with pesticide residues . Many studies reported that among fresh fruits and vegetables, some tomato, apple, melon, mango, grape, and plum have pesticide residues exceeded the MRLs established by the FAO/WHO.…”

“…It is worth noting that a 1:1 ratio of water addition to the sample as well as a freeze-out step involving PSA as adsorbent improved the removal of interferences, leading to not only cleaner chromatograms with lower baseline drift and shorter total run time, but also more column lifetime, which is time-and cost-saving ADI reference values were taken from the Australian Government Acceptable Daily Intakes for Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (Hossain, Rahman, Islam, & Adyel, 2013). Hazard risk index value >1 is harmful for human health (Syed, Alamdar, Mohammad, & Ahad, 2014). ACT, acetamiprid; ADI, acceptable daily intake; EDI, estimated daily intake; IMI, imidacloprid.…”
