The adsorption of pesticides (Atrazine) from water onto activated carbon prepared from calabash was investigated. The kinetic and equilibrium study was carried out, and data obtained showed that time duration, the concentration of the solution, the dosage of activated carbon and the pH of the solution greatly influenced the adsorption process. The adsorption kinetic study of the pesticide was done using various models. The result best fits pseudo-second-order using the coefficient regression value (0.9922) and intraparticle diffusion. Equilibrium isotherm data were analysed using the Langmuir isotherm model and Freundlich isotherm model. The result of the regression value provided Freundlich isotherm as the best fit to the experimental data, indicating the presence of heterogeneous layer sorption from the regression value of 0.7294. This study suggested that the activated carbon of calabash as a low-cost material is suitable for the adsorption of pesticides from water. Hence it could be applied as a cheap and effective material in removing pesticides in water bodies or industrial waste before disposal. La biotecnología es un campo interdisciplinario, en el que, se utilizan diversas metodologías y herramientas enfocados en la transformación de organismos vivos o sustancias derivadas de dichos organismos que pueden ser dirigidos a alguna problemática específica. Por una parte la biotecnología puede ayudar a introducir características fenotípicas y genotípicas en los cultivos, lo que permiten la producción de alimentos enriquecidos con nutrientes pudiendo ayudar a la diminución de la desnutrición en la población susceptible, además de involucrar las bases biotecnologías en la generación de técnicas de pronóstico y diagnostico tanto en enfermedades no transmitibles, como en enfermedades en los que se encuentran involucrados algún agente infeccioso, ya sea que hablemos de generación de proteínas recombinantes, vacunas y técnicas de diagnóstico molecular, que resumido podemos hablar de la estabilidad y/o recuperación de la salud de la población. Otro campo importante de la biotecnología es el uso de microorganismos y la biorremedación de suelos, agua, residuos, etc. Por lo que, en este manuscrito presenta una revisión sobre los aportes de la biotecnología en el campo de las ciencias de la salud, mediante el desarrollo de herramientas de cultivos modificados genéticamente enriquecidos nutricionalmente, diagnóstico molecular, vacunas, y gestión de desechos.

The environmental and occupational risk we confront from agricultural chemicals increases as their presence in natural habitats rises to hazardous levels, building a major part of the exposome. This is of particular concern in low- and middle-income countries, such as Brazil, known as a leading producer of agricultural commodities and consumer of pesticides. As long as public policies continue to encourage the indiscriminate use of pesticides and governments continue to support this strategy instead of endorsing sustainable agricultural alternatives, the environmental burden that damages epithelial barriers will continue to grow. Chronic exposure to environmental contaminants in early life can affect crucial barrier tissue, such as skin epithelium, airways, and intestine, causing increased permeability, leaking, dysbiosis, and inflammation, with serious implications for metabolism and homeostasis. This vicious cycle of exposure to environmental factors and the consequent damage to the epithelial barrier has been associated with an increase in immune-mediated chronic inflammatory diseases. Understanding how the harmful effects of pesticides on the epithelial barrier impact cellular interactions mediated by endogenous sensors that coordinate a successful immune system represents a crucial challenge. In line with the epithelial barrier hypothesis, this narrative review reports the available evidence on the effects of pesticides on epithelial barrier integrity, dysbiosis, AhR signaling, and the consequent development of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases.
