Sci., 53: 169-176.The efficacy of a brief exposure (1, 7, and 10 days) to a nitrogen-controlled atmosphere (N-CA) for major storage pests in a field validation study in the Czech Republic is reported. The main goal was to estimate how quickly the mobile adult stages of six species of storage beetles (oryzaephilus surinamensis, cryptolestes ferrugineus, tribolium confusum, tribolium castaneum, Sitophilus granarius, and Sitophilus oryzae) are killed after introduction of the infested commodity to prevent their further spread to the surrounding storage bins. The trials were conducted in a metal bin containing 25 t of seeds using the system of continual top-down nitrogen filling to replace the oxygen. The composition of N-CA in the silo was measured continually. The target N-CA concentration (i.e., ≤ 1% O 2 and 99% N 2 ) was reached at the bottom of the silo after 12 h of the purging phase of nitrogen silo filling. A one-day exposure to N-CA corresponds to top-down filling, which initially gives higher concentrations of N 2 in the upper than in the lower part of the silo: low efficacy was reached at the silo bottom (0-33.3%), while higher efficacy (16.7-100%) was reached at the top of the silo bin. The mortality variation at both locations was species dependent: the most sensitive was o. surinamensis, and the least sensitive were S. granarius and S. oryzae. Seven days of N-CA exposure led to 100% mortality of all tested species except for S. granarius (96.7% mortality at the bottom), while 10 days of N-CA exposure led to 100% mortality of all adults located at both the bottom and the top of the silo. This experiment showed that one day of exposure to N-CA caused significant mortality to reduce the spread of insects from the top of the silo but not from the silo bottom, and 10 days of exposure completely prevent the adult mobile pest stages of all tested species from spreading from the treated silo and causing cross-infestation in the storage facility.

The stem and bulb nematode (Ditylenchus dipsaci) is a serious quarantine pest of vegetables spreading worldwide via seed and planting material. Currently, a hot water technique is used as the pre-seed treatment, which is difficult to execute and the risk of seed damage is high. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the (a) penetration of gaseous hydrogen cyanide (HCN) into garlic tissue; (b) HCN phytotoxicity, and (c) nematicide potential of HCN against D. dipsaci. Penetration of HCN into the core of the garlic clove was approximately 30% of the concentration inside the fumigation chamber after 30 h of exposure. Decreased emergency was observed only in the exposure treatment lasting 16 and more hours. Garlic cloves naturally infested by D. dipsaci were treated with HCN at a concentration of 20 g/m 3 for 12, 18 and 24 h in a fumigation chamber, and 99% mortality was achieved in all three exposure times.

Sci., 52: 45-53.Pitfall trapping studies are available for particular stored grain pest species. In small farms, the stored grain pest control strategy is rarely species-specific but is often "pest ecological-group-specific" instead. A two-year field study was conducted in flat grain stores to compare the efficacy of cone-surface (PC trap; AgriSense-BCS Ltd., Pontypridd, UK) and probe-subsurface (WB Probe II Trap; Trécé Inc., Adair, USA) traps for three ecological insect pest groups (Group I, internal feeding primary pests; Group II, external feeding primary pests; Group III, external feeding secondary pests). Altogether, 1328 specimens (32% Group I, 11% Group II, and 57% Group III) in 12 species of Coleoptera (17% Group I, 25% Group II, and 58% Group III) were trapped. No significant differences were found in the efficacy of PC traps and WB Probe II Traps to catch the evaluated ecological pest groups over the long term. Our study indicated that for trends to appear in long-term trapping there was no need for the simultaneous use of both traps due to the low trapping differences between the surface and subsurface types of traps in all ecological pest groups. However, significant differences between the traps were found in the short-term evaluations and before and after fumigation; in that case, the use of both traps is recommended because of the higher sensitivity and more precise evaluation of efficacy of the control treatment effects.
