Pesquisa de anticorpos anti PGL-I através de ELISA em tatus selvagens do Brasil

Abstract: Armadillos have been involved in leprosy transmission and are considered a source of Mycobacterium leprae in numerous reports. Clinicians from certain areas of the USA consider contact with armadillos a risk factor for leprosy. However, there is a challenge associated with the role of wild armadillos perpetuating human leprosy in the American Continent. The presence of anti-PGL-I antibodies was investigated in wild nine-banded armadillos from leprosy-endemic areas in State of Espirito Santo, Brazil, by ELISA p… Show more

“…Despite the ecological importance, armadillos are intensively exploited as a source of trade and food (Balamayooran et al, ; Kerr et al, ). This condition results in fauna and human harm since these animals are important intermediates in the food chains, besides being reservoirs of microorganisms that cause diseases such as leprosy and paracoccidioidomycosis (Deps et al, ; Deus Filho, Deus, Menezes, Soares, & Lira, ; Richini‐Pereira et al, ; Truman et al, ). The morphological knowledge about armadillos is fundamental in order to allow the adequate management of these animals in the clinic and their preservation in the environment.…”

“…Other morphological variations may also be present, but they are still unknown. The armadillos, especially D. novemcinctus , are reservoirs of microorganisms such as those responsible for leprosy and paracoccidioidomycosis (Deps et al, ; Richini‐Pereira et al, ; Truman et al, ), and this characteristic may be associated with modifications in structures such as the larynx. Thus, the objective of this study was the macroscopic and microscopic description of cartilage of the larynx of the nine‐banded armadillo ( D. novemcinctus ).…”

“…No grande tema sobre Aspectos Gerais, apesar de a média de acertos ter sido alta (83,2%), algumas questões parecem causar duvidas nos participantes, como a de ter outra fonte de infecção além do homem. Embora ainda não comprovado que a doença seja uma zoonose [17][18][19] , a bactéria tem a capacidade de infectar e se multiplicar em alguns animais, sendo esses considerados como seus reservatórios naturais 20 .…”
