Pertussis Prevalence in Korean Adolescents and Adults with Persistent Cough

Abstract: We investigated the prevalence of pertussis in Korean adolescents and adults with persistent cough. Study population was adolescents (aged 11-20 yr) and adults (≥ 21 yr old) who showed persistent cough of 1-8 weeks' duration. Pertussis was diagnosed by culture, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and serology. A total of 310 subjects participated in this study, and 76 cases (24.5%) met the criteria for laboratory-confirmed pertussis. The majority of the pertussis cases (66/76) were confirmed by serology, while 3 … Show more

“…There was no significant difference in cough duration between pediatric adolescents and adults (Figure 3; p=0.711); the cough duration for patients diagnosed with pertussis was 7 days on median, 8.48 days on average, which was less than that in previous studies [6,7,15]. In this study, we 9 retrospectively analyzed the clinical symptoms of patients diagnosed with pertussis.…”

“…In addition, most adolescents do not receive regular booster vaccines; it has been reported that the probability of pertussis as a cause of chronic cough has increased [7]. Furthermore, pertussis infection in adolescents and adults has been found to be responsible for household transmission of pertussis to susceptible infants [19].…”

“…In a multicenter study of 607 adult patients with bothersome cough (≥2 weeks) who were recruited from nonoutbreak, ordinary outpatient settings in 2009–2011, the positivity rate for pertussis on PCR was 0.7% [69]. In another study of 310 adolescent and adult patients with cough of 1- to 8-week duration (in Seoul and Incheon, 2009–2011), the pertussis positivity rate in culture, PCR, and serology tests was 1.0%, 3.2%, and 24.5%, respectively [70]. A case-control study found a positive association between acute Chlamydia pneumoniae infection and chronic cough [71].…”
