“…Some were even able to do both; however, identifying as a Black lesbian oftentimes left these women on the outside of both networks and very uncomfortable in the world of intercollegiate sports. Further, and very similar to work done by Bruening, Armstrong, and Pastore (2005), Bruening, Pastore, and Armstrong (2008), and Carter and Hart (2010), we found that the lack of role models or mentors is a major barrier to Black lesbian women working in intercollegiate sports. There exist an increasing body of scholarship by sport scholars that employs a CRT frame to explore black student-athletes' perceptions and experiences of racism linked to student development, mentorship, academic outcomes, and sport management (e.g., Bimper, 2014b;Bimper, Harrison, & Clark, 2013;Carter & Hart, 2010;Carter-Francique, Hart, & Steward, 2013;Donner, 2005;Singer, 2005). The overarching agenda and impact of CRT is to problematize the manners by which race has historically and presently influences the lives of persons of color as well as the functioning and operations of a society undergoing constant change.…”

“…Research studies on mentoring in the context of college athletics have found that mentoring relationships with faculty benefited academic outcomes and retention (Carter & Hart, ; Comeaux, , Comeaux & Harrison, , 2007; Gayles & Hu, ; Martin, Harrison, Bukstein, ; Perna, Zaichikowsky, & Bockneck, ). A growing number of mentor programs give opportunities for educators, administrators, coaches, and practitioners to assist Black male youth in understanding the value and respect of accomplishments outside of sport (Martin et al., ).…”
